Everyday matter – the value of Textile Art

An exhibition created with the focus of materiality, slowness and opportunities of the craft. Innovation and critical processing of everyday life.

In collaboration with the Textile Museum of Sweden, Nordic Textile Art (NTA), a network for Nordic textile artists presents Everyday Matter, a notable exhibition of works in large formats.

”The slow processes of textile art with everyday materials as starting point. Its methods eliminate time and communicate through their materiality. Threads we all recognise but take years to master. While we look back in history, we work towards yet undiscovered possibilities. Everyday Matter - A critical processing of daily life

NTA, a non-profit association, established and controlled by professional textile artists who have strived to make the Nordic textile art visible. Sari Syväluoma, born in Finland, was one of the enthusiasts who set the goal for NTA to create a platform to put the Nordic textile art on display through a biannual or triannual event. She was a member of the workgroup for this exhibition and contributed with many ideas. We will honour her with this exhibition, as Sari left us much too early when she died in August 2016.

The workgroup decided that for this event, ten specific textile artists from the Nordic countries would be invited, as well as all the members mentioned above - previously or currently active - in a closed call. Everyone should work with the topic ”Everyday Matter”.

The exhibition is produced in connection with XVIII European Network Conference, Crossover.

The ten invited artists: From Sweden, Elsa Agélii and Emelie Röndahl; from Norway, Kari Hjertholm and Løvaas & Wagle; from Finland, Ulla-Maija Vikman and Silja Puranen; from Iceland, Ásta Vilhelmína Guðmundsdóttir and Bryndís Björgvinsdóttir; from Denmark, Grethe Wittrock and Ane Henriksen.

The ten artists juried from a closed call from NTA: Helga Palina Brynjolfsdottir, Elisabeth Brenner Remberg, Laura Isoniemi, Raija Jokinen, Aino Kajaniemi, Kerstin Lindström, , Vibeke Lindhardt, Linnea Blomgren, and Josabet Werkmäster.
