Body Beautiful - Diversity on the Catwalk

In the Body Beautiful: Diversity on the Catwalk exhibition, a new generation of fashion designers are challenging current beauty ideals on a number of levels: on the catwalk, in marketing and advertising campaigns, in fashion magazines, and behind the camera.

Great changes are taking place in the fashion industry. An industry that has depended on exclusionary and unhealthy body ideals is being questioned and is slowly rethinking its core principles. As models of differing age, size and race are beginning to take to the catwalk in greater numbers, the spotlight is on representation and inclusion.

The Body Beautiful exhibition focuses on five themes: size, gender, age, disability, and ethnicity. In addition to garments by well-known designers such as Max Mara, Dries Van Noten, Vivienne Westwood, and Ashish, the exhibition presents filmed interviews with influencers, models, stylists, photographers, and editors who share their views and experiences of the fashion industry. There are also photographs from the catwalk by legendary catwalk photographer Chris Moore.

The exhibition comes to the Textile Museum of Sweden from National Museums Scotland in Edinburgh, and consists of over 20 garments that are either on loan from private collectors or part of the museum’s own textile and fashion collection. The Textile Museum of Sweden is the first venue to exhibit the touring Body Beautiful: Diversity on the Catwalk exhibition, produced by National Museums Scotland.
