Borås Museum

The museum is situated in Ramnaparken, and is an open-air museum. It is home to 14 buildings moved here from different parts of the Sjuhärad district. The museum mainly depicts rural life in the 18th and 19th centuries. There is also two museum buildings dedicated to exhibitions and there is a new temporary exhibition on every summer.

The museum is open from June to August and open for pre-booked groups throughout the year.

The park is also home to Café Gästis, open during the summer season, situated in the old Inn, also known as Gästgivaregården. Buy Swedish fika with coffee, cake, ice cream or other treats.

One of our most cherished buildings is Ramnakyrkan, a church earlier situated in the parish of Kinnarumma, outside of Borås. It was built in the 1690s and was moved to the open-air museum in 1912. The church contains painted ceilings depicting both Heaven and Hell. They were painted by Detleff Ross, a painter of both Swedish-German descent. The building also houses Medieval sculptures from other churches in the Sjuhärad district.

Among the other interesting buildings in the park, we have a clothier’s home and distribution centre connected to the putting-out system, a minute country store, a parish hall and some traditional cottages.

The museum was started in 1914 by the local cultural history association – De Sju Häradernas Kulturhistoriska Förening. Today, the museum is run by the city of Borås.
